Background of Planet Phase Personality Inventory (PPPI)
Why do we connect naturally with some people while repeatedly struggling with others?
The Planet Phase Personality Inventory (PPPI) was developed by Roland Y. Kim, Ph.D., as a developmental approach to understanding personality and relationships. Drawing particularly from Object Relations Theory, attachment, trauma, and psychoanalytic perspectives on human development, the PPPI explores how early emotional experiences may contribute to enduring ways of relating to ourselves and others.
The five Planet patterns—Mercury, Mars, Venus, Earth, and Jupiter—provide an accessible framework for exploring these differences.
The word Phase is important. PPPI views personality not simply as a fixed collection of traits, but as something shaped through development and capable of continuing growth and change.
Rather than replacing established personality approaches such as the Big Five (OCEAN), MBTI, or Enneagram, PPPI offers a different question:
Not only “What is my personality?” but also “How might it have developed—and where can I grow from here?”
Meet the Five Planet Phase Personality types and their Bright and Dark sides
The PPPI describes five Planet Personality patterns: Mercury, Mars, Venus, Earth, and Jupiter.
Each Planet has a Bright Side, reflecting its characteristic strengths and adaptive qualities, as well as a corresponding Dark Side, where less adaptive or defensive patterns may emerge or become more pronounced under stress and adverse circumstances.
The five Planets are not intended as judgments of better or worse personalities. They offer different windows into how people experience themselves, relate to others, and continue to develop.
